'Women's Identity VIII' by Mwamba Chikwemba elegant portrait of a black woman wearing a traditional African headwrap. The artist focuses on subjects of femininity, authenticity, identity, and richness of black culture. Her models are often friends and relatives and noticing details of their behavior, style, and look, the artist enters a conversation about personal vs. collective, original vs. foreign, and authentic vs. standardized.

'The painting explores how this woman in my neighborhood looks with a head-wrap. She has never gotten any complaints about wearing a head-wrap from her husband. She believes you can still look sexy wearing it.' - M. Chikwemba

This is an original (unique) contemporary art piece that is in excellent condition (new). It is shipped directly from the artist's studio in Zambia along with a Certificate of Authenticity, signed and dated by the artist. You will receive the painting in a tube (unframed).

Mwamba developed an interest in art in high school. However, the path to the art industry was not simple: Mwamba graduated with a degree in Public Administration and had to try other jobs first before she realized that she has to dedicate her life to painting.

Although history knows a lot of similar examples, it is remarkable to observe how young female artist fights for her right to be recognized as a young professional and as an artist in general in a male-dominated society, like Zambia.

Her challenging story becomes a subject of her expressionism art as well: in her creative process, Mwamba focuses on women’s identity in a place where social norms prevail and female roles are strictly defined. The artist wants her creative drawings and paintings to be seen as a collective image of African women who have power, courage, and wisdom to follow their own goals. Enjoy the power of African wall art together with Mwamba Chikwemba!
