Seungyoon Choi is inspired and motivated by the rule of opposing forces. His practice is engaged with gestural abstraction: colors are vibrant, brush strokes are intuitive, movements are expressive, artworks are mainly large and overwhelming, just as their emotional impact is. Seungyoon's paintings have an innate movement, and yet they have a stop, they are bounded. The artist’s creative idea is about simplicity and complexity, big and small, movement and stillness.
Seungyoon Choi believes that the ’Beginning of the Stop’ is the basic rule of the world. There are two interpretations of a ‘Beginning’ and a ‘Stop’. Blue is generally defined as cool color tone. However, the hottest parts of fire appear to be blue as well, same as the hottest stars in the Universe. This is an example of opposing forces, and that is why blue always appears in the artist’s works.
Seungyoon Choi abstract oil paintings follow abstract expressionism art traditions and are executed on large canvases with dynamic interplays of colors. All works are from Seungyoon Choi’s collections ‘Beginning of the Stop’, 2015-2016 and ‘Cross-section of the moment’, 2017.
